Dental Implant

A dental implant (also known as an endosseous implant or fixture) is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor. The basis for modern dental implants is a biologic process called osseointegration where materials, such as titanium, form an intimate bond to bone. The implant fixture is first placed, so that it is likely to osseointegrate, then a dental prosthetic is added. A variable amount of healing time is required for osseointegration before either the dental prosthetic (a tooth, bridge or denture) is attached to the implant or an abutment is placed which will hold a dental prosthetic.

Root canal treatment

Overview

A root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth. The procedure involves removing the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), cleaning and disinfecting it and then filling and sealing it. The common causes affecting the pulp are a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, repeated dental treatment to the tooth or trauma. The term "root canal" comes from cleaning of the canals inside the tooth's root.

What to Expect During a ROOT CANAL

If you think you need a root canal, consult your dentist. There are a number of steps that occur over a few office visits.

1. X-ray – if a dentist suspects you may need a root canal, he will first take X-rays or examine existing X-rays to show where the decay is located.

2. Anesthesia – local anesthesia is administered to the affected tooth. Contrary to popular belief, a root canal is no more painful than a filling.

3. Pulpectomy – an opening is made and the diseased tooth pulp is removed.

4. Filling – the roots that have been opened (to get rid of the disease pulp) are filled with gutta-percha material and sealed off with cement.

5. Crown – Now the tooth is weak as its blood supply is not there so it needs a crown over it to prevent it from fracturing.

Scaling and Polishing

Even with regular and proper brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar will still build up over time.

Saliva in our mouths contains calcium and bacteria. Dental plaque is a soft film enveloping teeth which consists of thousands of different types of bacteria embedded in a matrix of proteins, sugars and lipids. Calcified (hardened) dental plaque is known as tartar. Brushing and flossing may remove some plaque but is unable to remove accumulated tartar.

Scaling

Scaling removes plaque and tartar and polishing removes stains and remaining plaque while smoothening and shining teeth so that dental plaque cannot attach easily to tooth surfaces.

Polishing

Polishing may then be followed by a fluoride gel or foam treatment to reduce post-scaling sensitivity and reduce the risk of tooth decay.

Dental scaling and polishing

Dental scaling and polishing is recommended to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, and may be necessary every six months depending on the oral condition of a patient. As infections and diseases can spread from the mouth to the rest of the body, affecting general systemic health, it is important to maintain good oral health and hygiene.

Fixed Partial Denture (Crowns and Bridges)

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth -- to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. It fits right over the top of the tooth, covering the entire structure through to the gum line. They cover, protect and seal the tooth to strengthen it.

They are necessary when:

• There is a large section of tooth decay, so that a filling will not suffice.

• To remedy large old fillings that have broken down or are surrounded by decay.

• When a tooth is cracked and a filling will not suffice.

• When a tooth is fractured or broken

Types of Crowns

METAL Crown :These include gold, stainless steel , or a base-metal alloy ( nickel or chromium). These can be used in posterior teeth where minimal reduction is required. They withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal

These crowns have a metal base and a porcelain coating on them

They can be color matched to your adjacent teeth (unlike the metallic crowns). Next to all-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look most like normal teeth.

These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth.

All-ceramic or All-porcelain

These crowns do not have any metal in them.

They provide excellent natural color match than any other crown type.

They are ideal for smile corrections. .

Can be used for both front and back teeth

Dental bridges literally bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two or more crownssupported on a tooth, one on each side of the gap . It helps in restoring the chewing capacity as well as aesthetics .

Cosmetic fillings

Cosmetic fillings, also called tooth-colored fillings or white fillings, are dental fillings that closely match natural tooth color and appearance. Unlike traditional amalgam fillings, which often provide an unwanted appearance, cosmetic fillings seamlessly blend with your natural teeth. Tooth-colored fillings can also be used to change the size, color or shape of your teeth. For example, cosmetic dental fillings can close gaps between teeth, repair chipped teeth or make teeth appear straighter and more even. Cosmetic fillings can also be used to replace old, silver amalgam fillings.

Most cosmetic or tooth-colored fillings are composite resin fillings, which cost more. Our staff is happy to answer any questions you have about the different types of fillings.
